Fit the Crime – Chuck Porretto – 11-26-2014 - Some folks will read these words and surely cringe Insisting that my views are on the fringe But search way deep in side Where truth and logic hide Youll know I’m right... Well maybe just a tinge - He took a swig of whiskey looking cool He dove from out the tree into the pool He missed and hit the deck He broke his skull and neck And now his mother wipes away the drool - He thought that he could pass on double lines He had the money and could pay the fines He had had both will and nerve But not the second curve They found the twisted wreckage in the pines - The penalty won’t always fit the crime It’s not too hard to leave before your time As harsh as this may sound Examples they abound The penalty won’t always fit the crime - He peered from top the chimney down the flue He thought he knew exactly what to do Just slide right down the chute And make off with the loot They’ll smell him in a week or maybe two - He sneaks beneath the fencing through a gap He steals the copper wire for the scrap A shock is what he got The wire turned out hot All they found were ashes and his cap - The sentence will not always fit the crime Do the deed and you will do the time But every now and then It’s multiplied by ten The sentence will not always fit the crime - Heavy drinking then he made the bet And on a dare he vowed to play roulette He did it just for kicks The odds were one in six He leaves a wife and children deep in debt - He thought that he could do a hit of crack It’s not like it was crystal meth or smack Be careful what you do When you’re fat and 52 He died right then from massive heart attack - The penalty won’t always fit the crime Selling nickels may cost you a dime No one said it’s fair It’s best that you beware The penalty won’t always fit the crime - He did not think that fella had the right Following him home so late at night And so he doubled back And went on the attack Against the gun his fists would lose the fight - A normal morning down in Ferguson Until he robbed a store and grabbed a gun And now the mother’s crying For the bullets started flying And he’s lying in the street when it was done - The penalty won’t always fit the crime Don’t look for reason, do not look for rhyme Justice may be blind But she isn’t always kind The penalty won’t always fit the crime - I know these tales caused some of you to wince Youll claim that I’m half- cocked and fully dense Youll say that I’m inept These words you won’t accept When really they are simply common sense - And I tell it to my children all the time The sentence does not always fit the crime
