Five arrested in Japanese woman gangrape case Kolkata, 2 January: A 23-year-old Japanese woman was allegedly abducted from the city and gang-raped, more than a month back. Cops today claimed to have cracked the case and arrested five persons in this connection, the incidents have stirred panic among women in the city who feel they are no longer safer. The revelation comes at a time when a woman was molested and her husband beaten up by a bunch of drunken goons at New Town on New Years night and an actress was molested at the entrance of her house in Baghajatin at Netaji Nagar on 29 December. Three of the arrested accused-Md Sabir Khan, Wasim Khan and Sahit Iqbal- are from central Kolkata, while the other two- Sajid Khan and Javed Khan- have been arrested from Gaya in Bihar. Police sources said, the 23-year-old Japanese tourist had landed in the city on a tourist visa on 20 November, last year. She was staying at a hotel in central kolkata where she met the three accused. Sabirs wife was a Japanese that help the accused to win the confidence of the victim. The accused than took the woman to Digha on pretext of a holidaying on 23 November. After reaching there, they threatened her with dire consequences and took away her ATM and drew close to Rs 76,000 from her account, added the official adding that they also molested her. Two days later, she was brought to the city only to be taken to Bodh Gaya on the same day by two men. Their she was handed to Sajid and Javed who allegedly confined the woman to an isolated place in gaya and gang-raped her for two weeks, said the official based on the information given by the victim. The duo then released the woman and got her boarded to a Varanasi bound bus. The Japanese tourist met some natives of his country in Varanasi and narrated to them about the brutality inflicted on her. To her horror, they also told her of being undergone the same ordeal. A group of Japanese then came to the city and met the Japanese consulate. A complaint was lodged with the police commissioner, in the last week of December. Based on her complaint, a team comprising members of women grievance cell, bank fraud and Anti-rowdy section, was set up who began the probe and arrested the three accused from the city. After probing them, we managed to reach to the remaining two accused in Gaya, said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Mr Pallab Kanti Ghosh. The trio was produced today in the court that sent them to police custody till 6 January. The two other accused would be soon brought to the city, he added. sns
