Flesh change: How the Blood Ravens survived Awhile back I posted an article I wrote regarding the now well known and accepted truth that the Blood Ravens are the survivors of the fleet which was scattered by Magnus, meaning they are in fact loyalist Thousand sons. The question becomes how did they manage to survive at all? The flesh change now better known as degrading into a jabbering dolt of a chaos spawn surged through the sons of Magnus once more after the Vlka Fenryka turned Prospero into a crater laden wasteland. We know that a squad of Thousand sons returned to their home world after its annihilation, what they found was a squadron of World eaters ready to pick them off and wipe them out, with only Revuel Arvida a Corvidae sergeant surviving and vowing to never stop until he found out the truth. Corvidae, hmm where have we heard that…….ahh yes our dear old friend Azhek Ahriman chief Librarian and sorcerer as well as leader of the Corvidae cult. This is where our tale becomes interesting, in order to stop the ravages of the flesh change from decimating anymore of his brothers, Azhek enacted the Rubric, a spell that essentially left his legion as armored ghosts at best. The logic behind the spell however, was to stabilize the gene-seed, which by this point was spinning out of control. So we are left to ask ourselves, how exactly could the blood ravens have survived 10 thousand years as loyalist sons of Magnus, without mutating out of control. The answer is simple, the Rubric worked just not in the way it was intended. Think about this from a basic perspective Ahriman cast the spell with his followers in the Eye of Terror, on the planet of sorcerers, steeped in the tides of the great ocean (the warp for those of you who still haven’t read the Heresy novels) controlling the spell in the warp was never a possibility, but the whole of the legion was not in the warp at the time, the fleet was scattered, decimated, and for the most part left for dead. Ahrimans spell worked, just not on the brothers he tried to save, the Blood Ravens survived because the progenoids stabilized when the Rubric was cast. Magic doesn’t follow the same rules of geography and physics, the spell was designed to save all the sons of Magnus, the ones in the warp were reduced to dust, yet the ones out in the galaxy were able to survive. Enjoy folks
