Florida lawmakers recently rushed through a bill to ban all Internet cafes, forcing over 1,000 cafes to shut down immediately. Miami-Dade’s Incredible Investments, LLC, owned by Consuelo Zapata, is now suing the state after her legal team went through the bill. The ban was so hastily worded that it can be applied to any computer, smartphone, or device connected to the Internet in the state. In other words, computers and smartphones have just been banned in Florida. The ban defines the now illegal slot machines as any “system or network of devices” that can be used in a game of chance. Many people currently use their smartphones and computers to play “games of chance”. The broad wording may be applied to any number of devices, and possibly, even the state’s own lottery system. The lawsuit by Zapata states that the ban was passed in a “frenzy fueled by distorted judgment in the wake of a scandal that included the Lieutenant Governor’s resignation” and declares the bill to be unconstitutional. Florida’s former Lt. Gov., Jennifer Carroll, was forced to resign in April after a charity Carroll been a consultant for was shut down on suspicion of being an Internet gambling front.
