For anyone following the Attendance and Extended School Day stuff that has come up this year I have an update courtesy of our Asst. Superintendent of Schools in Davis County. I spoke with Pam Park tonight about the origin of the Proclamation on Attendance that our School Board approved at the September 16 School Board meeting. She said there was a statewide meeting on attendance at the State School Board where they handed out packets of information on how to improve attendance in the individual districts. I asked her if it came from Attendance Works or Utah Voices for Children and she said yes. I also asked if the data was from the U of U study on chronic absenteeism and she said it came from there and other sources. She said the state is encouraging the districts to make this a priority which is why many of your districts have passed similar statements on attendance. I am requesting our board vote to amend our proclamation eliminating the inflammatory and frankly racist language in it. I hope they will do so. You may want to do your own research if this has come up in your school district and speak with your school board members about these two groups. I told her some of the things they recommend doing are frankly fascist and that is probably not the kind of organization Davis Schools wants to be associated with.
