For anyone who has taken a great shot-or wondered why I somehow do (now).... its posted on reddit and I dont want to lose the tips so heres the pasted post: [–]buriedinthyeyes (the redditor) : camera lenses are not as accurate as the human eye (mostly because they do not pick up depth as well as we do), so they distort the image. as a result, anything that is towards the edges of the camera looks bigger than it actually is. which is why, if youll notice, in group pictures, you appear fatter/wider if you end up on the sides than if youre in the center). for this same reason, but also in general, women wanna angle their bodies away from the camera so theyll appear smaller. hand on hips is a part of this. by crouching, their faces will look bigger on camera (and their bodies will be farther away, making them look smaller). the hand on hip both makes the arm look slimmer and draws attention to the hips/waist (which is usually flattering) and away from less flattering parts of the body. ideally, you dont want your hand-on-hip arm to be parallel to the camera, but angled away from it. the camera angled down catches light coming down on the face from above, meaning less under eye circles, wrinkles, and chin fat. a picture from below will capture all these things. also the angle invokes youth, submission, and vulnerability (i find them to be slightly to super predatorial depending on the angle), whereas taking a picture from below (which is what guy selfies tend to be like) invoke dominance and power. 3/4 head tilt = shows off the jawline/makes it look like a soft and heart shaped rather than squared or round. also denotes coyness and demureness, as opposed to coming off too strong by looking head on. also makes your face look less wide if thats an issue. parallell head tilt (i think the guy in the vines does this one) = makes the pose look spontaneous and fun, makes neck look long and slender. can also get hair out of your face but still in the shot if you have a lot of it. smiling. because not smiling is not attractive or inviting (this does not apply to models/celebrities as theyre going for something different when theyre taking their pictures.) SOURCE: i sometimes get my picture taken for a living. EDIT: 9. sticking a foot out in front of the other and putting the weight on the ball of that foot makes legs appear thinner (because theyre not a single mass and take up less space) AND tones the front leg (in the same way that leaning the hand on the hip tones the arm).
