For the past couple of weeks, Ive had to give a class on empathy with regards to mental illnesses. Many times, friends, family members, and loved ones do not know how to interact with those suffering from one of these brain disorders. Many of the members of my class did not know how to view their son or daughter and they wondered why couldnt they just fix themselves without understanding that there is no fix. Theres no silver bullet or magic cure. Its life long. Im vocal about my illness and I advocate for people who suffer from a mental illness. Despite that, my closest friends do not know anything about my illness. Although I am in recovery, it doesnt mean I have been cured. There is no cure. However, as I explained to my class, part of having empathy is having an understanding of the illness itself.
