For those of you following my cat story or anyone with a cat that goes outside please read my cautionary tale: It turns out that a neighbor took my cat to the SPCA to be neutered and reported that he was a neighborhood stray (funny as he wears a collar most of the time but its a breakaway that has to be replaced frequently but he has one on 95% of the time). The SPCA then went thru the process to neuter him and found that he already had been fixed and the incision on his belly was a tattoo to show this should he ever be caught again. Here is the kicker for me, the cat was drugged and released and subsequently was injured during the process. Furthermore, I was told I was lucky it was a nice neighbor as cats brought in and reported stray are not checked for a microchip. I was also told that Should he have been picked up by animal control he wouldnt have been checked either and wouldve most likely been destroyed. I cannot help but find this protocol completely absurd. What is the point of having a microchip if they are not going to check for it before performing surgery or destroying a stray cat? I am hoping to have this problem looked into or petitioned or some action taken to prevent others from going through the same or worse fate for your beloved animals. I am not a negligent owner, my cats are well fed, well cared for, microchipped, wear collars and are not left outside overnight or even for more than a few hours. I do not know how else to prevent this from happening, the cats refuse to be kept inside.
