For years, every time I drove up Inwood I would strain my neck to get a look past the gate, up the long wooded drive to my moms uncles house. His name was Gene Wallace and he had Hal Anderson build his long low ranch-style house in the early 50s on a spectacular site on the west side of Inwood just south of Walnut Hill. There were convex mirrors on the gates to look out for oncoming traffic. One time my grandparents were having dinner there and the staff kept coming out of the kitchen with bewildered looks on their faces. My grandfather had been tapping his foot on the call button under the table. The house was famous in the family for having air-conditioned dog houses for Genes bulldogs as well. Today, on the way home from a root canal, I strained my head as usual to discover the house had been razed to the ground. I feel so transitory. To quote Gary Busy in Barbra Streisands A Star is Born, Nothin changes but the changes, Slick. I hope they do something worthy and beautiful to replace it.
