For years it has become increasingly obvious to me that Islam is taking the place in world politics that was occupied by Fascism in the 1920s and 1930s. The only real difference is that social experiments such as Nazism came and went within a couple of decades whereas Islam spans thousands of years. All of this is easy for me to see and recognise as an uninvolved observer but because of the scale of Islam as a belief system and culture, and its distance from me personally, Ive tended just to shrug my shoulders, note the phenomenon and move on. But with current world conflict and particularly the events in Palestine and Iraq, the whole thing is coming more into focus. Its so obvious to me that the problem is not a military one or even a political one but one of deeply conflicting philosophies. But its easier to launch air-strikes or propose treaties than it is to deal with philosophical differences. Is there any historical precedent for resolving such things other than by armed conflict?
