Forgot to include the link to the news story about PETA. In the same vein, you should look into any animal organization you are considering supporting. I recall one story about the Humane Society of the United States--not to be confused with your local Humane Society--using only a small percentage of donations collected during Katrina. HSUS showed footage of animals on rooftops with swirling waters threatening to drown them. People gave and gave. And then money went elsewhere. It is cynical fundraising to wring money out of people based on heartbreaking images when the funds will largely go to corporate activities, like more TV advertising to get more money. Charitable organizations do have to make their financials public to some degree--how much money received, how much spent on salaries, buildings, travel, events, advertising, on and on--and finally, direct services to animals or people. With some well-known organizations, you would be surprised how little is spent on services.
