NWNT TRIUMPH IN FINAL TO SECURE FIRST GENETICS SILVERWARE No Woman No Try 15 – 12 Hays of Our Lives On a historic evening in Pembroke last Thursday, NWNT cemented their places in the annals of TCD folklore beating Hays of Our Lives in an epic thriller to lift the Division 1 Plate. Having faced off against Hays in a highly entertaining first game, it was fitting that the two sides should meet again to close out the summer league. Things however did not go to script in the opening quarter as Hays started brightly and with an extra girl on their side, managed to score a 4 point girl try. NWNT’s sole reply came from Johnston who read a long pass beautifully to intercept and make it over the try line. However more gaps in the NWNT defence allowed Hays to extend their lead and NWNT were now looking down the barrel at 7-1 down. The arrival of McLaughlin injected much needed pace for NWNT and helped shore up defensive frailties. Cheered on also by their legions of colourful and vocal travelling support, NWNT fought their way back thanks to two tries from try-machine Jones set-up by Keaney in the right corner to continue her fine scoring record. Leading by one at half-time, the second period of the final was always going to be a cagey affair. Hays hit back from the restart with a crucial girl try after a horrible missed tag from yours truly. But the intensity and fitness of this Genetics team has come on in leaps and bounds in the past few weeks and the opposition have always failed to cope. First, giving us his finest Usain Bolt impression, Tam lighted past the Hays defence to touchdown and soon after Jones completed her hat-trick with another try on the wing. It was also another game another try for Lanigan who gave NWNT some breathing space going into the last 5. Knowing that a girl-try could win it for Hays, NWNT were frantic in defence and narrowly managed to avoid conceding. The icing on the cake came from Kearney who burst through the Hays backline to seal an historic win for the Mendelers. The cup win capped a fantastic several weeks for this entertaining young side and was a good send-off for players like Brazel who leaves these shores soon. A marker has now been set for future TCD sides as college officials plan to mark this famous win with an open-top bus tour around the Pav. #comeonyouboysandgirlsingreen
