Forgot to update: Lynns celebration will be January 10 at 3:30pm at DeTurk Round Barn. Following is her announcement (feel free to share, I know its heavy on the work stuff, but I think shed be ok with it...) Lynn Marie Scannapieco Campanarios generosity, commitment to others, and love of life deeply affected and improved the lives of everyone around her - both personally and professionally. She dedicated her life to advocating for and serving those who were marginalized by social inequities. In her Public Health and Social Services career, Lynn epitomized the spirit of service and always went well beyond her job descriptions. She served clients in numerous communities, including Atlanta (Center for Disease Control & Fulton County), the Cayman Islands (in the prison), and Sonoma County. Lynn had a strong understanding of efficient and compassionate service delivery, and advocated for policy changes to improve access to services in underserved communities. She used her leadership skills to convene people from all political, social, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and persisted in maintaining direct service experience through volunteerism. In her work, Lynn embodied the true sense of community. Her commitment to diplomacy allowed her to have an expansive reach. She leaves a legacy of building coalitions to change the social and health disparities, as well as a legacy of empowering others to realize their own potential in their community. Of all the issues Lynn cared about, her work in HIV prevention and education was her greatest passion. She began her HIV work in the mid-80s while in college, and already understood and addressed the consequences of stigmatization. Lynn worked in the early 1990s as a Disease Intervention Specialist and Health Planner at the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness (Atlanta) as a Center for Disease Control (CDC) assignee, and has received numerous commendations for her HIV work. Just one of countless honors includes being invited to conduct a workshop in India in 2000 at the International Conference on HIV and Substance Abuse Prevention and Control on Coalition Building as a Prevention Strategy in HIV and Substance Abuse Control. She continued for nearly 30 years to have a strong presence in the community through her work in HIV prevention and education, homeless programs, and was on the Board of Directors of Face to Face. Lynn was most recently the Homeless Programs Coordinator for the County of Sonoma. Lynn was extremely curious and felt a deep appreciation of and fascination with the world around her. Her passion extended to her love for biology, nature, travel, and animals. She surrounded herself with pets, loved volunteering at the Marine Mammal Center, and preferred being in the ocean exploring sea life to terra firma. Lynn also had endless patience, energy, and playfulness with the numerous children in her life. As much as she contributed to her work and community, Lynn gave one hundred times that to family and friends. It is impossible to emphasize how much her absence will reverberate in our lives forever. She leaves behind her partner, Grace Villafuerte, father, Gus Scannapieco, brother & sister-in-law, John & Deb Scannapieco, nephews and nieces, Gus, Mira, Jonah, Luc, Isabela, Gaby, Alex, Tony (though she was Auntie Lynn to many more kids) and numerous relatives, loved ones, and friends. An epic celebration in her honor will be held January 10, 2015 at the DeTurk Round Barn at 3:30pm. Limited capacity only, carpooling encouraged, special parking instructions will be provided. If you like, please bring a small dessert for the dessert table.
