Formed in London in 1983, The Dream Academy set out to make music - TopicsExpress

Formed in London in 1983, The Dream Academy set out to make music unlike the power-pop of current British artists. Their pastoral music - rife with strings and woodwinds - led to rejection notices from label upon label. Along the way, they attracted the attention of Pink Floyds David Gilmour (who would play on and/or produce all three of their abums) and were soon signed to Warner Brothers. After dropping their self-titled debut album in late 1985, the first single Life In A Northern Town began to gain traction... eventually climbing as high as #7 on US charts in February of 1986. The song, often thought to be a ode to Northern England and the Beatles, was actually written for/in tribute to the British folk singer Nick Drake who tragically died at 26. Sadly, their two following albums did not fare as well and The Dream Academy closed up shop in 1991. All three members are still involved in the music industry to some degree to this day. Useless Trivia: The song Life In A Northern Town was initially called Morning Lasted All Day, but was changed when Paul Simon commented to Dream Academy singer Nick Laird-Clowes (to whom he was giving songwriting lessons) that it was not a good title.
