Foster Parent Appreciation Month Effective Date: Thursday, May 1st, 2014 WHEREAS, Alaska’s children are our most precious resource and are the future of our great state. Alaskans are grateful for the many foster parents throughout our communities who work tirelessly to ensure that children and youth facing difficult situations may achieve their greatest potential; and WHEREAS, foster parents play a very important role in our society as they provide temporary care for children who have been placed outside their own homes, offering a secure, stable, and nurturing environment during a time of disruption and change; and WHEREAS, there are approximately 400,000 children in out-of-home care in the United States, and nearly 2,000 here in Alaska; and WHEREAS, foster parents also help children and youth cope with the separation from their families, offer encouragement and support, and help them to reconnect with their families when possible, preparing them for bright futures; and WHEREAS, this month, we recognize the many foster parents, family members, volunteers, mentors, child welfare professionals, and other community members throughout Alaska who make meaningful differences in the lives of Alaska’s children and youth in foster care. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim May 2014 as: Foster Parent Appreciation Month in Alaska, and encourage Alaskans to offer their support to foster children in their communities, to recognize those who have opened their hearts and homes to become foster parents, to participate in the appreciation events happening throughout Alaska this month, and to explore the option of becoming foster parents to help children and youth in need.
