Four Corners - Possibly the finest South African movie Ive viewed. Weve wondered for years why Argentina, Iran etc. have so effectively told their stories while we blame budgets and other constraints for not telling ours. The truth:- we lacked gritty, gripping well-written and believable scripts. Four Corners is a nuanced, human story set within the most trying of landscapes - the Cape Flats. The gangster relationships, both within and outside prison, are well fleshed out, while the human and social issues arent ignored. The movie and the script stand in my mind alongside the quality of Her and Being Llewyn Davis in recent times. If we continue to make movies such as Four Corners, the refrain favourite South African movie will no longer be required. Kudos to Hofmeyr Scholz for an exceptional script, Ian Gabriel for his superb directing, to the cast, whose remarkable performances are too numerous to mention, to the editor for an immaculate job, and to the DOP and post-production for a beautifully shot and graded movie.
