Francis Juwah, A Priest that never was! A tribute by Fr Lawrence Odoemena, CSsR Like your surname “Juwah” depicted, The world and its glory you rejected. Like St Alphonsus whose true son you became, Abandoning the courtroom, the pulpit you claimed. As Francis, you were known for your simplicity, Which makes you amiable to little children. Whose father you truly became, Sharing in their sorrows and their game. O Brother Francis, How could have left us this way? The last place I saw you was in Owerri, When we both attended Fr Alex thanksgiving Mass. You were full of life as at the occasion, As you shared in the celebration. When I was leaving the occasion, You followed me to the car on a mission To collect Alex’s Sash which he had forgotten He had worn yours during the Mass, What a selfless confrere you were! Had I know that it was the last time, I would have spent more time in saying goodbye, Instead of sitting down here all alone And writing these lines of sorrow. I may not have known you much like others do But from our scattered encounters I do know You were really a true son of St Alphonsus Both in zeal and in simplicity. As you are committed to mother earth today We are consoled that you died in active service of the Word. Though people may question the timing of your death, Just less than two years before your ordination. Deep within me I am convinced That you are at peace with God Having died as a member of the Redemptorist family You are indeed a priest that never was! Rest in Peace, Brother Francis Juwah, CSsR
