*Free Akita on Craigslist - $20 rehoming fee.* Remember Shadow? The owner of this young male was attempting to rehome him on Craigslist because she could no longer afford his escalating medical bills. Hair was falling out and what was left of it was dry and brittle, appetite was changing, stools were loose and runny, and he was spending more time alone and away from the family. He was picking fights with the other dogs in the household and tearing them all up. He appeared to be in pain and they could not touch him, pet him, or bathe him. He had started to take on a bad odor. We spent time with the owner and discussed his medical history. We explained the horrible things that happen to dogs on Craigslist and the state of shelters and rescues = FULL. We asked her to let us try to get Shadow better, and to show our commitment to him, we offered to pay for everything hed need. All she had to do was exactly what we told her to do. Our plan was a food change, supplements, OTC/allergy meds and inexpensive natural supplements. We shipped her everything she needed via amazon (free shipping) with the understanding and agreement that if this failed, we were back to square one. Within two weeks, he improved. Within the first month, he was not so cranky and was not hiding so much. Appetite and stools improved and hair started growing back! He came to the owner one day for some love - something he hadnt done for months and months prior. By month 2, they could pet, brush and bathe him! Now at month 3, his tail went from bald to hairy to starting to get fluffy again, and despite the heat, he is filling in with some soft undercoat. Akita Angels has been sponsoring Shadows food and dietary needs until the owner, a single mom in nursing school, graduates and is employed in 10 months. To us, sending a bag of high quality food every 6 weeks is a very worthy expense. Rescues are full, she loves this dog but was at wits end and did not know what else to do. She was also financially strapped after having spent $1,000s of dollars with a vet with unsuccessful results. It is amazing that something as simple as a strict diet change and supplements has essentially turned their lives around. And the dog has not only stayed in the home, but the relationship between the dogs, and between Shadow and the humans, is 1,000 percent better. We hope you enjoy these updates on various dogs and families we have helped (or are helping) and thank you for your continued support!
