Free and Reduced Lunch I am fielding a few questions about why - TopicsExpress

Free and Reduced Lunch I am fielding a few questions about why we are giving prizes to get students to turn in free and reduced lunch forms. The brief answer is that if I spend $2,000 dollars in incentive prizes and two students sign-up, the revenue generated through the state formula will pay for the prizes. I believe that the district can easily generate over $60,000. This could pay for a teacher, it could pay for several employees insurance, it could pay for instructional supplies for two buildings, it could give over half of our staff steps on the salary schedule. In a time when we have costs increasing faster than revenue, we have to do everything we can. When we have legislators trying to cut funding to schools, I am utilizing a way to generate just a small portion of that back. Is getting people assistance for meals wrong? It quite often depends on if you are the person who is hungry. We know that some people are victims of circumstances and some have grown dependent on the government. Is the system we have faulty? Probably, but I have a responsibility to make this school the best I can. By doing this, I generate a little revenue for the school and feed a few more students. Alan Stauffacher Superintendent
