Freedom Film Festival (FFF) 2014, Petaling Jaya Several members of Function 8 and friends spent the weekend in Petaling Jaya watching movies at the FFF. We learnt much from KOMAS who organised the festival and are exceedingly impressed with the quality of the films made by young people – Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar and the Philippines. Singaporeans too produced impressive films. WUKAN: Flame of Democracy by Lynn Lee and James Leong is an intense documentary about the difficulties faced by a newly elected local government after years of corruption. To Singapore with Love by Tan Pin Pin is a film that tells the silenced history of Singapore from the 1960s to the 80s and A Short Film on the May 13 Generation by Jason Soo, unfolds the courage and sacrifice of the youths in the 1950s. The last two films compliment each other and give viewers a brief history of Singapore from colonial times to the present. They will definitely go very well with Singapores 50th Birthday celebrations next year. The FFF gave us much food for thought too. The Pitch Winners, Fight Through Cartoon by Zunar & Mic Hoo tells of the challenging life of cartoonist Zunar who has been fighting for democracy through his hard hitting and creative cartoons. Anur Nak Sekolah by Ronasina is a moving film by the parents of a celebral palsy child seeking the rights of children with special needs. Leboh Agraria by Azharr Rudin is a thoughtful film. The films from European countries were also excellent. I was most impressed with Dangerous Acts: Starring the Unstable elements of Belarus. It tells about how art and freedom of expression can still flourish despite violence. This movie about courage and love for one’s country is vividly, artistically and daringly portrayed. Function 8 hopes to bring in some of the films to Singapore. This year’s FFF will be held on 15 and 16 November 2014 at the Arts House. In the meantime, FFF travels to Johor Baru. You can watch To Singapore with Love, WUKAN: The Flame of Democracy, Di Ambang: Living Stateless, Fight Through Cartoon, Leboh Agraria and Anur Nak Sekolah in Johor on Friday, 19 September 2014 from 4 pm to 10 pm at 11@ Century Hotel, 94 Jalan Pelanduk Taman Century, 80250 Johor Baru. It is definitely worth your effort to go to JB! Many Singaporeans travelled to Petaling Jaya to watch the inspiring movies of the FFF. JB is just a bus ride away! Dont miss this opportunity to watch these inspiring movies for just RM20!
