Fri 31st Oct 2014 30th Week in Ordinary Time Phil 1:1-11; Ps 111(110):1-2,3-4,5-6; Lk 14:1-6 Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees: “Is it against the law to cure someone on the Sabbath, or not?” They were speechless because they were well aware that the Law forbade any work on the Sabbath. But equally, the Law did not forbid saving life. The Sabbath is a time paradigm carrying a religious meaning. If we observe it merely for the sake of fulfilling a requirement without manifesting the true spirit behind for it, namely the glory and praise of God, what good will it be for us? If Jesus were to ask us the same question today, he would be inviting us to reflect deeply whether I do my parish ministerial work for own glory, whether I am faithful to Christ, whether I am attentive and recognize when someone is in need, whether I see in everyone brothers and sisters to love. As St Paul put it to the Church at Philippi, “that will help you to come to true discernment, so that you will be innocent and free of any trace of guilt when the Day of Christ comes, entirely filled with the fruits of uprightness through Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God.” (Phil 1:11) Lord, we pray for Your grace so that we may have the strength to change and to become more like You.
