Friends, I need your wisdom. We adopted the worlds sweetest - TopicsExpress

Friends, I need your wisdom. We adopted the worlds sweetest shelter cat, Kayla, two years ago. I was never allergic to her - sometimes Id get mild symptoms if I petted her for a long time, but a Claritin always helped. Then, a few months ago, we fostered a set of tiny kittens for an animal shelter. Those 1-pound kittens brought on severe allergies for me (swollen lips, hives, red eyes - the entire attractive package). The kittens have since been adopted, but my cat allergy remains and Im worried that Ive now become severely allergic to Kayla. Ive tried everything to offset it. Ive gotten a vacuum with a Hepa filter, I bought a special dander-reducing wash for Kayla, and Ive tried keeping her out of my bedroom. Ive been on two courses of steroids, which help, but a day after I stop taking them, the allergy boomerangs right back. Id be devastated to have to give Kayla away, and I cant bear to think about how my kids would react. What else can I do? Would having a cat sitter take Kayla away for a week or two help, do you think?
