Friends, Im sharing this with you because its tremendous - I am SO EXCITED!! Applying was very competitive, and I wasnt sure I even had a shot at it - but Ive been accepted and Im thrilled, especially because, as it states below - Of the 233 alumni from this program, only four are from Tennessee - all four are men, and were mayors at the time of their participation in the CLI. This is the first time a woman, and someone from the legislative branch of county government, has been accepted into the program from the state of Tennessee. Knox County Commission Amy Broyles Commissioner, Second District PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release April 1, 2014 NACo announces the 2014 County Leadership Institute on June 1st-5th, in Washington, D.C. Commissioner Amy Broyles has been accepted into the prestigious National Association of Countys Leadership Institute (CLI). Now in its 11th year, the Institute addresses the challenges and directs the potential of local elected officials to forge positive, sustained change in their communities. Participants gain a broad perspective –about themselves as leaders, about the issues facing their communities, and about how to engage broad networks of interested parties to develop solutions to difficult challenges facing their communities. Challenged by faculty and peers, CLI attendees explore concepts and develop relationships that affirm and direct their leadership potential at local, state and federal levels. The curriculum provides a basis for the application of adaptive leadership as a strategy for addressing challenging issues in public service. Participants will work with faculty and as a group to develop: an overarching sense of direction and vision; a mechanism for innovation and creativity; a resource for invigorating organizational culture; increased risk-taking, improved decision making, team building and more effective communication; and a committed network of peers within NACo. Commissioner Broyles was nominated through the Tennessee County Services Association (TCSA), and the selection process was very competitive. CLI is designed for elected officials with at least three years’ experience at the policy level in county government, and that demonstrate an interest in innovative approaches to governance. Each state nominates only one candidate, but no more than 30 are selected nation-wide to participate. The County Leadership Institute is presented in partnership with Cambridge Leadership Associates, along with faculty and associates from the New York Universitys Robert F. Wagner School of Public Policy, and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
