From Angus... What a relief it was to get off the power anchor, after 24hrs in the bow cabin, sweat condensing on the ceiling then dripping back down onto us, being unable to stretch out, inhuman smells and cramping muscles Hamish and I bullied Alex and Jamie out of their palace in order for us to catch some sleep before the session was over. What a palace it was and what a sleep! As soon as we pulled in the power anchor Jamie and I started our shift, the winds change the swell lessened and we flew. Over the next 24hrs we covered over 80nm. We were told to expect this weather for the next 7 days, this quickly made us all extremely excited and happy. From this we worked out that we would have covered 1000nm by the beginning of next week, and then been at the half way point a week later if the weather continued. Its these kind of statistics that I thrive off. I am not mathematical in any way, but I love statistics, when I run and I always thinking about what I have covered, in what time, whats left to run, and then come up with some way to break down the distance mentally. This works with running as by in large there are very few external factors as to how fast you can run. With Ocean Rowing you can rowing your arse off for 24hrs but only get half the distance you covered the day before. This is whats happened over the last couple of days. Since our rapid 24hrs the weather changed, the swell from the Southern Ocean became more prominent, and the wind blew more from South then from East. This has meant we are now averaging 2.7knts, almost 24nm less a day than we initially anticipated. This has really effected me, which is pathetic, but I suppose I got my hopes up very early, and naively, then when they were crushed it really damaged my positivity. So today I read a card from my Mum which read “Tell the negative committee that meets inside you head to sit down and shut up” I also watched a video that my Girlfriend sent to me before I left, wishing me luck etc... These together put a massive smile on my face. Now I have sucked it up, got rid of all negative thoughts and cracking on.
