From Cave Dwellers to Billionaires AN AMAZING FACT: Zsolt and Geza Peladi are two brothers who were so poor that they lived in a cave near Budapest, Hungary. To support themselves they sold whatever scraps they could find on the street. But in early 2009, their lives took a dramatic turn. Their maternal grandmother left them and their sister a portion of a seven billion dollar fortune. The two boys knew that their mother came from a wealthy family, but their mother was estranged from her family. Later, they even lost track of their mother. Upon the death of their wealthy grandmother in Germany, German law required that the estate be given to the next of kin. No surviving relatives were known, so the authorities started genealogical research. They discovered that the brothers’ mother had died and that the Peladi brothers were the direct descendents. Only the deaths of their grandmother and mother could have released the brothers from their extreme poverty, especially since their grandmother never knew them. After all, a will cannot be executed until a death has taken place: “For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator” (Hebrews 9:16). In a way, we’re in the same situation. Estranged from God by our sin, only Christ’s death could connect us to the riches of salvation. Just as the authorities searched for descendants, Jesus searches for us: “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). But while the Peladi brothers could lose their fortune, our inheritance in Christ will not fade away.
