From Ka-Ronda Judith Caringal of Sports Radio: BMX RIDER DANIEL CALUAG WINS PHL FIRST GOLD MEDAL IN INCHEON Daniel Patrick Caluag broke the gold medal spell hounding team Philippines by clinching the country’s first gold here at the 17th Incheon Asian Games. The London olympian lived up to the expectations of the filipino officials led by the day’s birthday celebrant Chef de Mission Richie Garcia, who from the start named Daniel as virtual gold medalist. Caluag, with no U-c-i points to brag about except that he is 2013 Asian Championship winner, proved to be the real dominant rider in the 8-man bmx men’s event , ruling the morning’s seeding run in 35.489 seconds--- 0.79 of a second ahead of closest rival, world 144th --Masuhiro Sampei of japan. In the moto runs 1-2-3 , Daniel swept all races including run-2 when the Japanese came closest in a photo finish fashion. But Caluag tallied 3 pts in the process, 1 pt for every run victory---- 4 pts clear of silver winner Sampei. On one side, His brother Christopher John better known as CJ missed the bronze , when chinese zhu yan outmaneuvered him in the first turn of the last run—thus settling only for 4thspot, 2 pts behind the chinese, who took the bronze. And this BMX Champ is Daddy sweet as he dedicated his victory to his one week old baby girl—Sydney Isabela. Daniel claims his baby is his new inspiration to strive harder to show to the world the greatness of Filipinos. After the Asian competitions dust has settled ,Daniel told Sports Radio that he intends to talk with Philcycling and the P-s-c to map out detailed plans for his bid at rio de janeiro olympics where he targets to win a medal. The tough Incheon bmx event was also participated in by 2 Chinese , 2 Koreans and Indonesia’s Toni Sharifudin—ranked 94th in the world. (DZSR Sports Radio 918/JAC )
