From REACH Community Health: Its REACH AGM time! And we hope you can join us—it will be an exciting time- lots of updates—including the plans for the building! We will have a special presentation by Dr. Gary Bloch: “Treating Poverty: What Health Providers and Teams can do to address the most powerful determinants of Health.” The AGM will be held Thursday September 25th, 2014, 1145 Commercial Drive. He begins at 6 pm. More about Dr. Gary Bloch: He is a well know advocate working to reduce the impact of poverty on health. Dr. Bloch’s TED talk has gone viral (youtube/watch?v=FLRT0bvaz98). His clinical, educational, research and advocacy efforts focus on health provider-based interventions into poverty as a risk to health. He has designed training programs on poverty interventions for health providers at all levels of their training. He has been involved in raising public awareness on issues ranging from social assistance reform to housing supports to health benefits for refugees. His “Tool-Kit” for physicians has been modified for use by communities across Canada. And he is implementing and evaluating novel health team positions aimed at reducing poverty as a health risk. Dr. Bloch founded and chairs the Ontario College of Family Physicians’ Committee on Poverty and Health. He is also a founding member of the advocacy group Health Providers Against Poverty. He is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. He has a large clinical practice, and focuses on the health of people who live in poverty and without adequate housing. Dr Bloch is speaking at a variety of places the week of September 22nd too.
