From a clever woman in one of my mommy groups. I love this. Im so appreciative that she did this research: Here is the verdict on disinfectants that I know some of you were waiting for. In my class we tested various disinfectants against 2 types of bacteria, one fairly easy to kill and one tougher bacteria. I tested straight vinegar, diluted vinegar and my own vinegar/orange peel/thyme disinfectant. Other disinfectants tested were things like bleach, hydrogen peroxide, lysol and other store bought brands. Many of the store bought brands include toxic chemicals. In the end, my professor was impressed to see that straight vinegar and my vinegar/orange peel/thyme recipe killed at least as much of the bacteria as some of the store bought disinfectants. The reason? Typically, bacteria cannot survive in acidic conditions. The acid in the vinegar is good enough to kill most bacterias, especially those found in the kitchen. The diluted vinegar, however, did not do so well so I suggest using it full strength. If the smell bothers you, fill a container with orange peels (and thyme if you have it or add some thyme oil) and let it sit for as long as you can. I keep a large jar of this at all times to refill my spray bottles. Thyme oil has really impressive antimicrobial and anti-parasitic properties (among other things). It is the ingredient in a lot of natural disinfectants that can be found at the store. Hydrogen peroxide also does really well at disinfecting so why not use that to bleach your kitchen sink? So there you have it! No need to use chemicals in your house! Vinegar really does work and its cheap! Jenny Campbell-Jacquet
