From my extremely intelligent friend, Barbara Gray, as concerns - TopicsExpress

From my extremely intelligent friend, Barbara Gray, as concerns women and the Bible. Although I am a nonbeliever myself, I do respect her views. And as a Christian woman who always walks the talk, I value her opinion on this subject. In my opinion, biblical references to all aspects of life in general in this year of Our Lord 2014 are not only very touchy, they are to be reviewed with extreme caution. I say this as a woman who indeed believes in a Higher Power I choose to call God and as a human being on this planet who believes the words in that Good Book, while inspired by God, were written by mortal men. Period. Plain, ordinary men. I would no more assign the intentions and directions of my life to those words than I would to Truman Capote, a man whose words were also inspired by his own fervent beliefs in something grand and intangible. That there are books written by spiritual and divinely-inspired women back in that day, yet purposefully left out of the Bible we all have on our shelves today ..by men, of course.. only cements my belief that as long as we insist upon structuring our lives based on a very conservative or even a potentially generous and liberal interpretation of the Scriptures in either Testament, we are dooming our race, certainly the female gender, to a life of second-class placement and importance. Are the Scriptures wonderful, inspiring, educational, even holy? They certainly are to millions all over this world. Bless them and their Faith, until with this Faith and its named religion they create and support a situation where any woman, man, or child is damned and persecuted for existing in a way that does not fit their bill. If I believe in any one thing about the gift Grace has given this race, it is the ability to learn, to discern, to live and love kindly and to respect the lives of others here. I do accept the Bible as the words of God..but I feel that way about a great many writings by many other authors. To continue to give it ..or anyones interpretations of it.. this immense power over the lives of so many millions of women a n d men on this Earth is sheer folly. And in the case of this particular woman described above, potentially deadly.
