From the funeral of Max Steinberg, zl by Danny Schiff - so poignant. My heart was there... (those of my friends who were there...please post thoughts. Thanks). Today, we said goodbye in Jerusalem. Goodbye to Max. Max Steinberg ... the lone soldier from Los Angeles who was buried this morning at Mount Herzl. 30,000 people came, and I was among them. We stood in the blazing sun to thank him... to thank him for all he did for his people - our people - for defending us and our homeland so bravely, and for being prepared to give his life for our sake. There were people as far as the eye could see ... of every background imaginable. As I stood there, I was conscious of you, my friends ... I knew that so many of you would have been there too, had you only been in Jerusalem. You were very much with us in spirit... Who has 30,000 people at his funeral? Who has 60,000 more who would have been there if only they could? This is the stuff reserved for presidents or royalty. And thats the whole point: to us, each human being is royalty, and most particularly one who is prepared to die so that we might all live... Farewell, sweet prince... Rest in your beloved land in peace...
