A shooting at the ice rink at the popular midtown Manhattan park late Saturday sent two men to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. (AP) NEW YORK – A popular midtown Manhattan ice rink was once again filled with skaters on Sunday, as police investigated a shooting the night before that left two people with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said they were interviewing witnesses, but no one had been taken into custody by late Sunday morning in connection with the shooting Saturday night at the rink at Bryant Park. Witnesses said they heard shots ring out at about 11 p.m., causing the crowd to scatter. Police said it was unclear where the shooter was firing from, whether it was from on the ice or outside the rink. Joe Carella, a spokesman for Bryant Park Corporation, the not-for-profit company that privately manages the park, said there were about 300 people on the ice at the time of the shooting. The rink opened as normal on Sunday morning. Many people sitting at tables in the park were unaware that the shooting had occurred. Allen Targhi, a Manhattan shoe salesman who comes to the park almost daily, said he hadnt heard about the violence. But Im surprised — absolutely surprised. I expect peace and love and happiness in this park. Its the reason I come, he said as he lounged in the sun. Targhi couldnt recall any recent crime in the park. In the old days, more than 20 years ago, yes, there were muggings and stabbings — but not now, he said. The park is between Fifth and Sixth avenues and near the New York Public Library. Its popular with both New Yorkers and visitors. The ice skating rink, which is free to use, is open until midnight on the weekends. The park also features green space, restaurants and tables and chairs for public use.
