GOOD SHEPHERD MARIA MONTESSORI TRAINING CENTRE CELEBRATES 70th ANNIVERSARY This morning Deputy Head of Mission Lianne Houben was the guest of honour at the 70th Anniversary celebration of the Good Shepherd Montessori Training Centre and opened the Montessori Exhibition Children at work. The exhibition is open to the public on Friday 19th September until 4 pm and on Saturday 20th September from 9 am until 12 noon at St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo 7. As one of the oldest training centres, the Good Shepherd has worked tirelessly to pass on to teachers Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy. Over the years, these teachers have handed out thousands of diplomas and are currently teaching 320 students at the Good Shepherd primary school. NIENHUIS The students are taught in beautiful classrooms. The classrooms are outfitted with materials of the Dutch company Nienhuis. This partnership started back in 1929, when Maria Montessori met carpenter Albert Nienhuis in The Hague. Nienhuis’ factory is located in Sri Lanka and they are worldwide suppliers of Montessori schools. As the main sponsor of the joyous event, they used the occasion to generously donate materials for four classrooms to the Centre. WORLDWIDE In her opening speech, Ms. Houben highlighted the global presence of Montessori and its importance for Dutch education. Currently, there are over 160 such primary schools in the Netherlands alone. Rev. Sister Stanislaus Vas informed her that in Sri Lanka there are over 60 recognized schools. The Dutch embassy would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone on their hard work and achievements!
