GOVT SUPPORTS SMMES IN EFFORTS TO ERADICATE POVERTY AND CREATE JOBS Government sees small business enterprises as a core component of its programme to eradicate absolute poverty and promote citizen empowerment, including the youth, as well as a catalytic segment for growing and diversifying the economy as a whole. Vice President, Ponatshego Kedikilwe, told a workshop for media workers on reporting on SMMEs in Gaborone yesterday that government provides self-help packages and concessional loans, training and mentoring and the facilitation of market access along the supply chain to small businesses. Kedikilwe noted that over 200 new businesses, with an expected domestic investment of close to 400 million Pula have been financed by CEDA since April last year. The new businesses are expected to create about 2 thousand jobs in the sectors of property, manufacturing, services and agribusiness, across the country. He added that government expects the SMME approach will enable Batswana to successfully compete as players within a regional and global economy whose playing field is not always favourable.
