Genesis 41:38-41 ESV And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you.” And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” I marvel at Joseph s wisdom and character in these times. Though we cannot tell the exact timeline of the events in Potiphars house and his imprisonment, we do know that at the time of his dreams (and not long before he was sold by his brothers) he was 17. By the time he was freed from prison he was 30. So for more than a decade, we see him walking by the Spirit of the Lord despite being rejected and sold into slavery by his own brothers. Instead of allowing anger and bitterness to rule him, his gifts of administration given him by God still shine through and he is blessed. Only to then be falsely accused and sent to prison for years. Here is yet another great opportunity for the flesh to overcome him and Gods work in him to be thwarted. But he still draws near to God and God draws near to him (James 4:8) for His glory and Joseph s ultimate good. Do I allow the Lord to work in me according to His sovereignty, trusting at all times that He is in control and has a beautiful purpose for the trials He allows in my life? Or am I overcome by the circumstances so much that a sense of injustice can quench my giftedness and my ability to be used by Him? Or in good times, does my pride lead me away from Him and focus my eyes on myself instead of my Lord? Joseph was surely human like the rest of us, but there is no doubt that the Lord used him because he drew his strength from Him and wisely walked in His ways. Lord, continue to teach me your ways that no matter the circumstances that I find myself in, I will walk with You and reflect You to others who deseparately need You.
