Genre media challenge day 3: Favourite supernatural film For the purposes of this challenge, my definition of supernatural media involves stuff like magic, monsters, demons, etc. This sort of media can be funny, or disturbing, sometimes a mixture of the two. No aliens or robots - that falls more under science fiction. This might seem like a cliched answer, but Ill probably go with The Shining. Whilst I dont find Jack Nicholson particularly scary (his scenery chewing in the third act is actually pretty fun to watch), the movie does have a creepy environment, and it has been influential on a lot of similar movies since then. Actually, comparing this with the miniseries, Stephen Kings criticism of the Kubrick film seems to come across like You are the audience, I am the author, I outrank you. Whats even better? I caught this film when I was about 13-14 on television, and the only parody I saw of it (that I was conscious of) was the Simpsons parody The Shinning. I personally dont feel I can fully enjoy movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark or Wrath of Khan, because they have been referenced and parodied so much in other media that it no longer feels fresh to me. The Shining probably would have been the same way had I not seen it at that young an age.
