George, Dr. Vosburgs grand dog, is doing better after two scares. Thursday, he developed an abscess in his throat. The swelling closed off his airway in the middle of the night. We did an emergency tracheostomy so he is now breathing through a tube in his neck. His owners were very brave and even helped with chest compressions when he stopped breathing. Today, on this rare sunny Sitka day he became severely overheated because he can not pant to cool himself. After oxygen, cool IV fluids and ice packs, he is back on the road to recovery. We hope to remove the tube as soon as his throat is no longer swollen.
