Ghazni the capital of Ghaznavis. Ghazni is located 140 kilometers south-west of Kabul at 2200 meters above sea level. On a rocky knoll, looming over the city is a citadel which is still being used for military purposes. During the period from 994-1160 was Ghazni ghaznavis capital of the empire which covered Northern Indian, large parts of Central Asia, as well as Persian. It was Mahmud of Ghazni who spread Islam to northern India and his famous author Firdausi who wrote his classic works Shah-Nameh. After the Chingez Khan completely destroyed the city 1221, it was the 1500s before the city during Baburs dominion regained its importance, but not as Cultural center but of military strategic nature. In the citys immediate vicinity there are a number of historical monumental of a unique nature. A few kilometers outside the city is Sultan Mahmood Ghavnavis mausoleum. Before the war there was an Islamic Museum, which housed a number of works of art from Ghaznavis era. There situates also Sultan Masouds and Bahram Shahs minarets built during 1100-s. They are today the only remaining parts of the immense madrassa (Islamic university) in Ghazni and the scholars who sought from throughout the Islamic world.
