Giving Up Your Rights... For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. Luke 14:11 Do you love to be right? Who doesn’t? It feels good, and in many cases even gives you a sense of power, doesn’t it? Here’s the thing about always having to be right. Even if you are right, too often your insistence on proving yourself right brings hurt to the people around you. What if Jesus had clung to his right to be right? He would have left us in our sin. But he didn’t. He gave up his right to be right, and in many cases he calls you and me to do the same. What about Saul anointing David as king, skipping over his own son, Jonathan? Jonathan showed remarkable humility. He didn’t claim his right to the throne. Saul repeatedly tried to kill David, but Jonathan risked his life to protect and encourage his friend. No wonder David grieved so heavily at Jonathan’s death. The next time you are faced with a conflict, quietly refrain from being right. When you give up your right to always be right, you’ll be surprised by the blessings that can unfold.
