Glad tidings for the men who frequent the Masjid!-Shaykh Fawzan (hafidhahullaah) Question: Shaykh Salih, the questioner says: Can we testify that a man is a believer merely because he regularly attends the Masjid for prayer; as it appears in a hadith? Shaykh Fawzan: Yes. It comes in a hadith: إِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ الرَّجُلَ يَعْتَادُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَاشْهَدُوا لَهُ بِالْإِيمَانِ “When you see a man regularly coming to the Masjid, bear witness that he is a believer.” This hadith; even though it is weak there is a verse that proves it. The statement of the Exalted: إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَاجِدَ اللَّهِ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَأَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ وَآتَى الزَّكَاةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ فَعَسَى أُولَئِكَ أَنْ يَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُهْتَدِينَ The Masjids of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakah and do not fear except Allah, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided. (Soorah At Tawbah 9:18) Shaykh Uthaymeen was asked the same question: Question: Can we testify that a man is a believer merely because he regularly attends the Masjid for prayer; as it appears in a hadith? Shaykh Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah): Yes. There is no doubt that the one who attends the prayers in the Masjids, his attending the prayer is proof of his Imaan. This is because the only thing that brought him out of his home, taking the trouble to come to the Masjid is his faith in Allah the Exalted. As for the statement of the questioner: “As it appears in the hadith”; then he is alluding to what has been narrated from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: إِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ الرَّجُلَ يَعْتَادُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَاشْهَدُوا لَهُ بِالْإِيمَانِ “When you see a man regularly coming to the Masjid, bear witness that he is a believer.” But this narration is weak, and it has not been authentically reported from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.
