Gonzales Man Killed in Fatal Crash on I-10 in East Baton Rouge Parish (Update) UPDATE – On May 23, 2014, Troopers were notified by Our Lady of the Lake medical personnel that the front seat passenger in Marchand’s vehicle, 50 year old Karen Matherne of Gonzales, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Baton Rouge – Shortly after 12:30 am on May 23, 2014, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on I-10 eastbound east of LA Hwy 42 (Highland Rd.) in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 45 year old Armand M. Marchand, IV of Gonzales, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Marchand was driving a 2004 Cadillac SRX eastbound on I-10. For unknown reasons Marchand’s Cadillac ran off the roadway to the right and entered into a canal. Upon entering the canal the Cadillac became submerged. Marchand was transported from the scene to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge where he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Marchand was properly restrained at the time of the crash. Driver impairment is unknown at this time, and a toxicology sample was taken from Marchand and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Although not all crashes are survivable, Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
