Good Night ! Spring is gradually setting in around the Avalon. Good to get your email. The SS Kyle has brought a great deal to this family over the years. My grandmother met and kept in touch then later married my grandfather from a chance get together onboard the Kyle as she went north from St. Anthony . He was returning home from World War One after serving while she was also returning from training through The Grenfell Mission in Boston. Apparently he was a very good accordion player , the ship had delays for weather and the nights were danced away in the Smoke Room. Yet another story kept in fading memories untold but very , very true. The Compass Newspaper Office is about 6 rock tosses from my door . Leave here and go up the street. Pass where Gus Forward then later Earle had the Garage, Pass Jimmy Moores Grocery now gone, pass the Duffs house ( now Sophias) , past The Candy Man Factory ( gone ) , pass Dolly and Mary Udells Ladies Clothing ( closed), past Wm. Udell Mens Clothing(closed) ,pass Tilleys Snack Bar ( closed) past The Earle Freighting Service Office ,( closed) , Earle Shop ( gone ), pass Guys Office ( closed) pass CB Electronics ( gone) pass Pleman Whites Barber Shop ( gone) , pass The Leckie Fishing Supplies , ( closed) , pass the Bond Theatre( closed), pass Saunders and Howell Dept. Store(closed), pass the Coral Restaurant ( closed) pass WJ Moores Ltd. Furniture Store( closed) , pass WJ Moores Warehouse ( gone) and sure then , well then you are at the Compass Newspaper!!!( 176 Water Street ?) I one day back in May of 1959 was the youngest resident of Water Street ! Now with May again only days away I am fast becoming one of the oldest residents who have remained on this stretch of road. I live in a home not a house and try to be a good citizen of Carbonear . I carry a love of history for this Province. The Compass can use any of my stories if in some way it helps preserve the SS Kyle , The Earle Fishery Heritage , The Labrador or anything within. regards, Keith Hardy
