Good evening, everyone! Tommorrow We celebrate the coming of the three Kings or Magi and they represent all nations coming to worship the Lord as God, King and Savior. In our chapel, the three kings make a pilgrimage around the windows until they reach the nativity scene, every day moving a little closer, until they arrive at the stable on the Epiphany. (Matthew 2:2). Upon finding the baby Jesus, “they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh” (Matthew 2:11). Gold (Exodus 25:10-17). The gift of gold to the Christ child was symbolic of His divinity—God in flesh. Frankincense is highly fragrant (Exodus 30:34). It is a symbol of holiness and righteousness. Matthew 27:34 says Myrrh symbolizes bitterness, suffering, and affliction. Jesus would grow to suffer greatly as a man and pay the ultimate price when He gave His life on the cross for all who would believe in Him. But here is a twist.... I heard something very interesting the other day, about gold, frankincense and myrrh. It rings true. I havent anything to back it up. I will share it with you because I found it interesting. The Magi brought these particular gifts for practical reasons. The gold to help the Holy Family buy necessities for the child; frankincense to help purify the air in the house; and myrrh as a salve for the baby (it helped keep the babys skin dry) and it was used for medicinal purposes. It pleases me to think that the Magi would be so touching as to bring gifts that were spiritually symbolic and also practical. And thats just the way our own lives should be toward God. We deepen our faith in God by speaking and celebrating Gods presence, but our everyday faith is a faith that also loves the earth. Our gifts should be just like the Magis gifts. Spiritual and practical. God bless each of you and may you express his generosity in giving things to one another...especially prayer, love and sacrifice. See you tomorrow! Sr. Mary Elizabeth, fsp
