Today is Jury Rights Day- a nationwide day of action for fully informing everyone of jurors right to conscientiously acquit defendants when a just verdict requires it, including setting aside the law to do so when necessary. Jury Rights Day is held each year on September 5 in commemoration of the famous jury nullification case of Quaker William Penn whose jury refused to convict him of publicly preaching the Quaker religion in violation of Englands Conventicle Act. This case firmly established in English common law our rights of speech, assembly, and religion, as well as jurors right to deliver a general verdict based on conscience.
