Good morning everyone. I thought that Id post something a little different this morning. Many of our posts are asking for donations from you or looking for emergency foster homes, or the like but sometimes its nice to share a happy story with everyone. Perdy is a very special little girl who was dumped on the charity at 4 months old by an owner who simply didnt want her anymore. One of my colleagues took her in for a couple of months and proceeded to look for a forever home for her. We decided to expand our existing family of a dally and a chocolate labrador to include Perdy. Our first few months with her were exhausting. She would launch herself off the floor at meal times to knock her food bowl out of your hands and then hoover the food up off the floor like shed never seen food before. She would not walk in a straight line on a lead but would rather zig zag everywhere and trip you up. She would also bark at every dog she passed in the street whether on or off lead. Her piece de resistance was to bark and howl from the minute you put her to bed for at least an hour solid every night. Now for the good news ...... After a lot of hard work with her, Perdy will now sit and wait for her dinner. She walks on lead like an angel, she has the occasional bark at a dog passing by but 99% of the time glances at them and walks past. Off lead, she simply runs and plays with the other dogs. And finally, she goes to bed when told each night and we do not hear a peep out of her until the morning. I thought Id share this with you all as being a behaviourist, I often get calls from many people who have rescued a labrador and are experiencing issues just like these. Despite what we are often asked for, there is no such thing as the perfect dog. We do not have Lassies or Tin Tins sitting here for rehoming. A typical labrador, especially a young one, will often exhibit behaviours such as these and sometimes worse, but with perseverance, training and patience, most of these behaviours can be successfully addressed, with a little guidance. Perdy is now settled in with her new family as you can see from the attached photo. I have also shared a photo of the beautiful Perdy who recently won second prize in an online photo competition for Youre the one that I want - the dog that the judges most wanted to take home :-)
