Got a little lost leaving the Atlanta airport Monday at 5 PM. The route out up I-85 north was easy enough, but traffic was horrible. 2-1/2 hours got me about 75 miles, and I was looking forward to hitting SC 11 and cruising that lovely little road along the foothills to home in Pumpkintown. I was anxious about finding the exit because Id missed it on the last trip this way. I was passing a line of trucks and saw a sign for 11 at the next exit. I floored it and just made the turn. Oh, it was so nice to be off the stinking Interstate and cruising along a little country road. I enjoyed it for quite while before realizing that Georgia 11 is not South Carolina 11. I had no idea where I was. I swallowed my male pride and stopped at a store to ask directions. The (rather hot) girl at the counter had just moved there from Baltimore and didnt know how to get anywhere. There was a rack of maps, but none of Georgia, though this was Georgia -- strange! There was one of SC and I bought it (it was stapled shut, so I had to pay five bucks to look at it). Here I should say that I dont have a cell phone -- never have and dont intend to. Ive never lived anywhere where they work. So appealing to Siri was out. The SC map included some parts of GA, but nothing relative to where I was. With a fresh cup of coffee and a donut I headed on -- dead reckoning. I stopped at another store and the very nice Indian lady at the counter didnt seem to understand that the map I showed her was of SC and not GA. She kept pointing to Greenville and saying Gainesville. I topped-up my coffee for a dollar and headed on, still dead reckoning. Eventually I found a US highway that I recognized, and took it in the presumed correct direction. That worked, and eventually I was on SC 11 that I thought that I had been on 3 hours before. Got home a little late, but nobody seemed to notice. It was a nice day for a drive.
