Got absolutely soaked last night. The skies were clear when I first set up, so I didnt put the tent up at first. Then I did, when it was drizzling, and got to sleep... It was dark and late, and the only place I could find was on an incline... well, the winds got bad enough to pull out the stakes, and the tent collapsed on me and the pup. I was dead asleep and didnt wake up... when I did, there was just a bit of breathing room around my head and Bronx, and EVERYTHING was soaked. I got up to clear everything up and pack up my gear, and it started raining again... so I had to set up the tent AGAIN and wait for the rain to stop... it finally did, and I went to a laundromat, where thankfully I had enough change for a dryer. My shoes are still soaked on the inside, though... wiped them down as good as I could with paper towels but it wasnt enough. Ugh... this is the worst part about living outside... the cold wet miserable parts.Hopefully it doesnt rain again tonight. Seems like it has every night since I left. The storm are following me. Weird weather for June. The two chicks who said they might get a ride North never came back. I think I should try my luck on the highway tomorrow. Ive been the abnormal presence in Normal Illinous for going on three days now, and I dont want to wear out my welcome. This one gas station has been really cool in letting me sit out front with a sign saying Need a ride North. First they tried to tell me I couldnt sit there, but then I pointed out I had money, wasnt asking for change, and had just bought a pack of cigarettes in their store, and then they were okay with me sitting there. I still havent had to ask for any change yet... random strangers keep giving what I need without even asking. Its really strange, actually... it was never like that in the past when I traveled.Maybe people in general are becoming more compassionate and empathetic towards the suffering of others. That would be a pretty cool shift in human conscioiusness. I hope I can get to the point where I can help people as much as theyve helped me some day.
