Got sent this from one of our athletes today … (Thanks Joe!) The No. 1 Lesson from Navy SEALs: ‘Don’t Quit in Anticipation of Future Failure’ While it seems obvious in the comfort of our daily lives I see and hear almost daily where we anticipate our future failure even before we even try. The most notable example in our box is choosing whether or not to come to a WOD simply because what is in the workout that day. I don’t mean you see the WOD posted the day before or as you wake and silently get a pit in your stomach as you ready yourself to come in. What I mean is the people that come up to me days later and tell me … “Yea, I meant to come in but (insert movement and ailment combination here) kept me from coming in”. Or, maybe even more dangerous is when I am told they didn’t come in because they didn’t think they would do as well as they hoped, or not Rx because it “was too heavy, I mean, who can even LIFT that much weight!” The cherry picking of workouts or not coming in due to fear only serves to keep your skill in the movement at a low level or reinforce that fear of the movement/weight. Period. What I hope to see instead is committed athletes that are willing to apply themselves to work on their “goats” and do the best they can that day, ego aside. That is what makes you stronger. Just as iron sharpens iron, applying yourself when you know its not going to be your best performance is almost more rewarding that if you know you will crush a WOD. What we do in the box is as much mental as it is physical. You don’t get to cherry pick what happens to you in life, nor should you cherry pick your WODs. That habit only serves to reinforce your inabilities, not your successes. So next time you see the WOD posted and you get the pit in your stomach, swallow hard, put your gym clothes on and get to the box and apply yourself the best you are able to that day. That is how you get better, faster and stronger. See you at the box …
