Daily Trust newspaper report 9th May, 2012 Caption: Mark to FG-Dialogue with Boko Haram: Senate President David Mark yesterday asked the Federal Government to re-start talks with the Boko Haram sect to end its campaign of violence that has killed more than 200 people in the past year alone. (These) misguided groups are our brothers and sisters, government must therefore explore all avenues to discuss with them, Mark said, apparently referring to the sect which calls itself Jamaatu Ahlis Sunnah Liddaawati Wal Jihad. Punch newspaper report 10th May, 2012 Caption: Boko Haram: Rep faults Mark over calls for dialogue: A member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Bitrus Kaze, has faulted Senate President David Mark’s call for dialogue with Boko Haram as a way of ending the spate of terror attacks in the country. “Despite the fact that I hold Senate President David Mark in high regards and given his brilliant military background, his views, especially on security matters ought not to be taken for granted. “However, I beg to completely disagree with him on this one. Government must never entertain any form of dialogue whatsoever with Boko Haram or any terrorist groups however called.” Vanguard newspaper report: 24th April 2014 Caption: Rep calls for decisive action against insurgency: Jos — As President Goodluck Jonathan meets with the 36 governors and security chiefs today over security challenges across the country, the member representing Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, Plateau State in the House of Representatives, Bitrus Kaze has called for more decisive action against all forms of insurgency. “The time of cajoling, persuasion, dialogue or amnesty is long gone and we need to face terrorists for who they are. Nigeria is in a full blast war waged by the terrorists and we need to go full blast against terrorism.” Thisday Newpaper Report: 30th April, 2014 Caption: Boko Haram: Mark Calls for Full Scale War: “All along, we have been reactive; if we are not proactive, we cannot deal with it. I have been in the forefront of saying we must dialogue with them but I think we must take the battle to a level where they must beg for dialogue. We cannot do this unless the locals on the ground there cooperate with members of the armed forces,” Punch newspaper report: 22nd January 2013 Caption: Grazing bill, an invitation to anarchy – Rep: Member representing Jos South/East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Bitrus Kaze, has expressed fears that the National Grazing Reserve and Stock Routes Bill now before the National Assembly will create more problems than it is intended to solve. “The territorial expansion contemplated by the draconian provisions of the Grazing Reserve Bill are unambiguous and inarguably infringe on the CFRN 1999. Rather than solve any security problem, the discriminatory provisions of the Bill if passed will certainly worsen the age-long clashes between farmers and the pastoralists.” Leadership newspaper report: 20th July, 2013 Caption: Benue, Nasarawa Plan Grazing Reserves For Fulani Herdsmen: The governments of Benue and Nasarawa states yesterday resolved to set up grazing areas for Fulani herdsmen to check their clashes with local farmers. The decision was taken at a joint peace meeting of the two states at Government House, Lafia. A communiqué issued by the governments of Benue and Nasarawa states after a marathon meeting on 19th July, 2013 stated in part: “Nasarawa and Benue states in liaison with the federal government should set up grazing areas for migrating Fulanis.” The Nation newspaper report: Sunday 27th April, 2014 Caption: Tiv won’t concede an inch of land for grazing reserves, says Torkula: The Tiv are in no mood to concede an inch of their land for cattle grazing by the Fulani, the paramount ruler of the Tiv, Dr. Alfred Akawe Torkula, has said. “I will not concede one inch of Tivland for grazing reserves or grazing routes. My subjects are farmers and they need the land to farm. In modern times, and globally, those investing in cattle acquire land for ranches. They then source for food for their cattle. This solves a lot of conflicts. “Farming is our occupation. We don’t even have enough land. Tiv lands in Taraba and Nasarawa are gradually being taken over. They still want us to give the little land we have left to farm for grazing. That is too much to ask. It is unacceptable.”
