Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, amen. The Closing of FUMC Robstown A Decision Made by the Church, not District nor Conference. The news was on last nights telecast by KRIS and tonight by KIII, First United Methodist Church, a historic landmark church for over 100 years, is closing. To quote from their letter to me, After prayerful reflection these last few months; considering our size, resources, median age, physical limitations, and overall history, the Administrative Council of First United Methodist Church of Robstown has voted to disband. These are truly sad words that reflect the reality of many churches, some of whom outside our district boundaries, but not the Corpus Christi television viewing area to worriedly ask, Are we next? That is a question that only you can answer. The Bishop has made very clear that we are not in the church-closing business. Ours is a culture that wants to promote growth among us, and the efforts at the conference level have been directed at helping our churches grow, not close. So, please know that neither I as district superintendent, nor Bishop James Dorff as bishop, made the decision for Robstown. The lessons to be learned from this closing is that we cannot sit comfortably Sunday after Sunday and doing nothing during the week to grow the love of Christ in our communities, and expect for the church to grow. It is a arduous task, but one that Christ called us to do. Go into all the world, Christ said; I add no exceptions, for we should be going out to seek the lost, the last and the least. We should be praying that God send to us those whom nobody else wants nor sees. Say a prayer for the folks of Robstown. We are praying about next steps to have a United Methodist presence in that community. Pray for the Banquete congregation for they are also anxiously awaiting what is next for them as well. We should all be firm believers in what Paul shared with us, I (we) can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Go out and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world! Your in Christ Jesus, Rev. Eradio Valverde, Jr. District Superintendent
