Great Day! Last week my staff and I had an opportunity to meet our Mentor of the Hair World. L’Oreal was flying in Tony Ricci from Edmonton to perform at a hair show in Toronto. Being only 1 ½ hours away, we were able to set up a Master Cutting Class close to home. Like meeting a movie star for the first time, we were thrilled, nervous and multiple questions and thoughts were swirling in our heads. “What would he be like?” “What inspires him?” “What are we going to learn?” “Where is this going to take me? On top of all the questions, try telling your model that she gets no option or choice on how you are going to be cutting her hair. Not many of us are truly that daring. We arrived an hour early, dressed for success, waiting patiently for Tony Ricci’s entrance. There he is, as down to earth as humanly possible, why all the fuss, right? The morning went well, Tony demonstrating 4 different looks on a mannequin. The afternoon arrived and so did most of the models. There is always one that gets cold feet. Now, we are preparing to cut and style our models. I am a child again….needing approval… needing guidance. I take 2 to 5 courses a year, why am I sweating? I think I forgot how to cut hair! How is this possible? Take a deep breath, relax, and remember it’s your work, it’s what you do, and you’ve got this! I was trying to be Tony, not myself. I was trying to do his work, not mine! What is so great about hair, art, music is, we make it our own. We just need to be motivated from time to time, to move forward, and carry on. It was a GREAT day! I came back to work feeling more grounded, having been given the opportunity to do something I have never done before. I feel inspired! Learning from a mentor takes you to a whole new level! Thanks to my model and Tony! There is nothing more gratifying than seeing your beautiful piece of work walk out that door with a big smile attached to it!
